assassin fly:
Asilidae are the robber fly family, also called assassin flies.
This robber fly was sat poised, on a convenient plinth. Later I was to find out it's ture characteristics, Isolated intent.
They perch like that waiting to pounce on passing prey (other insects). They're most obvious in open habitats, like heathland & can be numerous on coastal dunes.
